ABOUT THE TRAINER:

Operation PAR's Chief Executive Officer, Nancy Hamilton, MPA, CAP, CCJAP, holds a master’s degree from Troy State University Public Administration College, a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from the University of South Florida with an associate’s degree in Early Childhood Development. She is a Certified Criminal Justice Addictions Professional (CCJAP) and a Certified Addictions Professional (CAP). Ms. Hamilton has more than 33 years experience in behavioral health care services, including more than 21 years as a trainer, adjunct instructor and teacher in prevention, intervention and treatment services.

Ms. Hamilton is a strong advocate for women and children’s issues and is a well-recognized trainer and public speaker on topics relating to substance abuse, women, adolescents and families, pharmacology, alcoholism, criminal justice issues and child development. She has provided training at national conferences conducted by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and other federal agencies. She has presented at hundreds of conferences in state, nationally and internationally.

During the past decade, Ms. Hamilton has been instrumental in designing and implementing Operation PAR’s research projects, including its Cannabis Youth Treatment study funded by CSAT. Additionally, Ms. Hamilton is the former Co-Principal Investigator the Cannabis Youth Treatment Study, a three-year national multi-site project funded by CSAT. In September 2001, Operation PAR’s Family Support Network, a model tested in the Cannabis Youth Treatment Study that was developed by Ms. Hamilton and Dr. Frank Tims, won the Department of Children and Families Grand Prize for Best Practices.

A leader dedicated to the community, Ms. Hamilton represents Operation PAR by serving on the following boards: NIDA Clinical Trials Network Florida NODE Steering Committee; President Elect for the Florida Juvenile Justice Advisory Board; CFBHN Board of Directors; New Century Institute/Keep Kids Drug Free Foundation; FADAA Executive Committee; the Pinellas County Substance Abuse Advisory Board (SAAB) and the Substance Abuse Coalition of Pinellas County. In 2001, Ms. Hamilton was the recipient of the Florida Juvenile Justice Association Special Recognition Award signifying her commitment to the promotion of effective juvenile justice policy and the support of the success of the Florida Juvenile Justice Association.

COURSE SYNOPSIS:
This workshop is designed to provide participants with information on up to date, research based approaches to drug abuse and dependence using evidence based models of Motivational Enhancement and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. This workshop will provide an orientation to the methods and findings of the CSAT funded Cannabis Youth Treatment Project (CYT. The workshop also will present the basic structure of the treatments methods and how to provide fidelity criteria to ensure consistent delivery of services. The workshop will offer the participations an opportunity to practice the appropriate skills from the methods presented. Background on Motivational Interviewing as the basis of MET/CBT will allow participants to understand the transtheoretical framework of the methods presented. The workshop will provide in-depth application of the Cannabis Youth Treatment approaches — Motivational Enhancement/Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. This workshop is especially designed for clinicians and case managers working in out-patient, residential and other community settings.

As a result of attending this workshop, participants will:

· Develop a greater understanding of effective assessment and engagement strategies for working with clients and their families;
· Learn about the treatment methods developed as a part of CSAT’s Cannabis Youth Treatment Project;
· Gain a greater understanding of the key elements of MET/CBT ;
· Develop an in-depth understanding of and basic skills for providing Motivational Enhancement Therapy/Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, by practicing strategies;
· Gain an appreciation for the challenges and strategies for implementing research based treatment strategies in real-world treatment settings;
· Gain information on maintaining fidelity to a model.
