COURSE SYNOPSIS:

The goal of this training is to increase knowledge and skills in assessing and treating personality disorders, especially for clients with co-occurring substance use disorders.  The workshop will focus on differential diagnosis, the theories about the etiology of the disorders, and what is known about effective treatment approaches, particularly for Cluster B.  Current research and practice wisdom will be reviewed.  Participants will learn ways to set and maintain appropriate boundaries in working with this population, how to recognize transference and counter-transference issues, and how to keep an appropriate sense of humor and optimism.  Participants are encouraged to actively engage in discussion, sharing their own experiences in working with this often challenging population.
